The problem
The decisions that set an institution’s direction sit with its leadership. Where to invest, which fields to build, how to position for the decade ahead: each is consequential, infrequent, and hard to judge from inside the institution. Too often they are settled on assertion rather than evidence, on the loudest voice in the room or the peer everyone happens to be watching. They take months to resolve and still arrive without a clear answer, as the same questions return to committee with no new information to settle them. When a decision is finally reached, it is delivered as a deck: presented, approved, and then shelved, while the institution carries on much as before. The cost is not only the wrong decision. It is the time, the credibility, and the momentum spent failing to reach the right one.
